Are you ready for the big move to the Industry 4.0?

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, also referred to as the Industry 4.0, is coming our way full-fledged, whether we are ready to face it or not. At Worximity, we provide you with some tools to ensure that you smoothly ride the wave rather than getting caught under it. We recently fell upon an article on the topic written by Bernard Marr, an international best-selling author and advisor in strategic business and technology, and thought we'd share some interesting insights.

What should we expect from this revolution?

At large, the Fourth Industrial Revolution has the potential of enhancing overall quality of life. It promises to be disruptive in a very distinct way from the previous industrial revolutions as it directly impacts the notion of being human. By turning towards cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things and of Systems, substantial changes will be made to the live, work and associate with one another.

In terms of business, by becoming smart manufacturers and enforcing the use of smart technologies in factories, it will enable linked machines to autonomously make decisions due to interaction and visualization of the totality of the production line.

What should we pay close attention to?

In order for this transition to the 4.0 to be fully effective, governments must plan for and instil the proper regulations for these new capabilities to ensure security protection. As some jobs will become obsolete, manufacturers will need to account for a job market that is set to be increasingly segregated. The changes derived from the Industry 4.0 might arise so promptly that even those that are advanced in terms of knowledge and preparation might be caught in the whirlwind of this revolution.

What is suggested to adequately prepare for this disruption?

  1. Put people on the forefront and stress empowerment - It is essential to be reminded that these technological advancements are predominantly tools that are crafted by people for people.
  2. Be proactive - Change is imminent. In order to be successful, cooperation and a shared vision of how technology is altering our lives will be necessary to tackle this major shift.
  3. Invest in technical infrastructure and data analysis - To stay ahead of the competition, companies will need to go the extra mile to consistently remain smart, relevant and connected.
  4. Develop leaders who will thrive through this revolution - Our reality may be greatly different in a near future. It will require for tomorrow's leaders to embrace instability and change, work with greater flexibility and develop or strengthen their critical thinking abilities.
